TOP TEN FAVOURITE CHRISTMAS ALBUMS

What can be more glorious and joyful than music created to celebrate the birth of Jesus? I have listened to a lot of Christmas albums over the years, and as talented and entertaining mainstream artists can be, I personally believe that it is Christian recording artists and songwriters that best capture the spirit of Christmas—a true celebration and reflected understanding of the significance of the birth of Jesus Christ from those who believe.

I myself wanted to focus on the birth of Jesus when I wrote and recorded my Christmas album Red & White. While I have no problem with other artists (Christian or not) choosing to sing and record mainstream holiday songs, I personally chose to pick Christmas carols and write songs that honoured the birth that literally changed the world. And while two of my original songs are in the voice of a fictional character, the focus remains on our Father in heaven, His Son and how He unfurls glory in our ordinary lives. You can listen to my album here.

Here are my favourite Christmas albums over the last 10 years (in no particular order).

Artist: Michael W. Smith & Friends
Title of CD: The Spirit of Christmas
Year Released: 2014
Favourite Song: “All Is Well” (featuring Carrie Underwood)
Notes: No one quite captures the joy and essence of the holiday season like Michael W. Smith. This particular CD features a stellar lineup of stars including Vince Gill, Lady Antebellum, Martina McBride, Amy Grant, Michael McDonald, and more. Also worth checking out is his 2007 release It’s A Wonderful Christmas

Artist: The Tenors
Title of CD: The Perfect Gift
Year Released: 2009
Favourite Songs: “Instrument of Peace” &  “Wintersong” (featuring Sarah McLachlan)
Notes: It’s no secret that I am a huge fan of The Tenors. I’ve been practicing the “duets” they do with female artists (such as “Wintersong” above) in anticipation of singing with them one day. Seriously.

Artist: The Wiebes
Title of CD: Christmas With You
Year Released: 2009
Favourite Song: “Messiah (Anna’s Song)”
Notes: What can I say? I was a big fan of Shane Wiebe when he was on Canadian Idol. But what I love about this album is that Shane’s wife Angela shows how equally and gloriously talented she is too.

Thanks for your list of Christmas albums, Carolyn Wilker! I am familiar with a few of those names and/or albums, but I must admit that the only one I have listened to is the one by Susan Boyle! I will keep my eye open for the others that are publicly available here in western Canada! God bless.
