20 BEST LANDSCAPE AND WILDLIFE PHOTOS OF 2020

To say that 2020 has been an unusual year is an understatement. In fact, it has been a year that has turned our world upside down. In many cases, the things that have brought us joy—time together, and creative pursuits that bring us peace and life—have been decimated. And yet, we have carried on to the best of our ability and hope and pray that what we have personally learned about ourselves and others in 2020 can be used to build a better life in 2021.

With the lockdowns, travel restrictions, and weather conditions since the pandemic began, I was unable to get out and photograph as much as I normally do. Almost three quarters of my time in 2020 was spent on the Prairies, until we picked up and drove across Canada in the midst of the pandemic (click here to read about that journey).  The rest of my time was spent in the Maritimes, where 19 of the 20 featured photos were taken.

During this period of time, I came to realize more fully that although I am not a painter, I have—or at least am developing—an artist’s eye for landscapes, buildings and other constructions, and nature. So, some of the photos here, to me anyway, look like they could be paintings. I discovered the term “painterly photographs” this year, and I feel like I have finally defined my niche—my passion. I look forward to taking many painterly photographs during 2021.

Here are my 20 best photos of 2020. All photos photographed in New Brunswick unless otherwise indicated.
